Weather in Maldives in April

Is April a good time to visit the Maldives?

April is the tail end of the Maldives dry season – there is still plenty of sunshine to be had before the south-west monsoon season closes in, however, and the beaches and crystal waters remain as enticing as ever. Temperatures (ever high in this equatorial island nation) peak during April, but are tempered by sea breezes and the odd rain shower, which, fortunately, seem to occur mainly during the night. Be warned – the sun is strong and it is possible to burn even on overcast days.

Climate in Maldives in April

April tends to be the hottest month in the Maldives, with temperatures rising to the mid-30°C during the day, and dropping little after dark. Humidity levels also tend to increase during April, as the islands head towards their rainy monsoon season. Rain and thundershowers tend to be unpredictable, but the average rainfall for the month of April is way lower (178mm) than what can be expected in May, June or July when the monsoon season takes hold. Despite the small inconvenience of rain showers, visitors can still be assured of a preponderance of sunshine, the average number of hours of sun for the month being close to 250.

What to pack for a holiday in the Maldives in April

A visit to the Maldives is the chance to indulge yourself in a selection of designer swimwear, with perhaps a wrap or two – there is little use for anything else on the hot, humid islands. For discos and dining in the evening choose loose, cool cotton clothing. If you take shoes at all, make sure they are light sandals or rubber booties useful for protecting the feet during snorkeling excursions. A camera, sun protection, some reading matter and your own snorkeling equipment can fill up the space in your suitcase created by the limited need for clothing.
