Visitors will find kiosks selling everything from food and snacks to cigarettes. Many of them are open 24 hours a day.
The best shopping areas are the Kassavetis shopping centre in Hersonissos, the market on 1866 Street in Heraklion, and Chania's covered Market. Travellers can shop for local produce such as bread, olives, honey and chestnuts at Agora on Odos Hatzi Michali Yannari. Popular souvenirs include embroidery, hand-carved wooden items, jewellery, and leather goods. Cretan honey, wine, or some delicious local cheeses are also good buys. Regarding clothes, some local shops carry designer labels.
October is a great month for bargain hunters. Shopkeepers are eager to sell their wares at the end of tourist season and there are many sales. Some holidaymakers complain about there being too many aggressive salesmen during peak-season. Generally, a firm 'no' will suffice. Winter visitors may find some shops and restaurants closed or operating with reduced opening hours.
